Opera Mini on iPhone Next Week | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Opera, the plucky underdog of the web-browsing industry, is hoping to get its browser onto the iPhone. The company will demonstrate Opera Mini running on the iPhone at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Opera was, and still is, the best option for many smartphones. Before webkit became the norm on the iPhone and Android phones, Opera was the only way to get a half-decent web experience on a cellphone. Opera Mini is one of two mobile browsers the company makes, and speeds up the web experience by putting Opera’s own servers between you and the internet and sending special images of the webpages to your phone. This uses less bandwidth and requires no html rendering on the phone, making things a lot faster.

Sanofi to Focus on Consumer, Generic Deals Up to $15 Billion – BusinessWeek

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Sanofi-Aventis SA plans to stick to acquisitions of as much as $15 billion as the French drugmaker seeks to replace revenue that it’s losing to competition from generic medicines.

Sanofi is focused on buying generic-drug makers in emerging markets and consumer-health companies, Chief Executive Officer Chris Viehbacher, 49, said today in Paris. While spurning mega- mergers, Sanofi did two to three acquisitions a month last year, and probably will do the same in 2010, he said. Fourth-quarter profit beat estimates after flu vaccine sales helped overcome the effect of generic competition, the company said.

Euro Slips as Bailout Optimism Fades – WSJ.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Initial euphoria over a possible Greek bailout at Thursday's meeting of the Council of European Union ministers in Brussels has subsided, leaving the euro lower Wednesday.

Sentiment was also being undermined by disappointment over Chinese exports as well as concern about what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will say about the central bank's exit strategy.

Speculation that the European Union, led by Germany, will come up with some plan to help Greece resolve its budget-deficit problem and prevent contagion to other high-deficit countries in the euro zone had helped the euro regain some lost ground late Tuesday. After coming under heavy selling pressure in the past few days, the euro staged a sharp rebound from under $1.3700 to nearly $1.3850 as German officials hinted for the first time that they might have a contingency plan for resolving the Greek crisis.

Bumper Patch Tuesday tackles multiple Windows flaws • Channel Register

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Microsoft has released 13 bulletins, covering 26 vulnerabilities, as part of a bumper Patch Tuesday.

All supported versions of Windows will need patching, though Vista and Win 7 (three critical updates) are less exposed than XP and Windows 2000 shops (five critical fixes).

Three of the bulletins are particularly severe and require immediate attention. One of these critical updates (MS10-006) addresses two vulnerabilities in the SMB networking service protocol that might easily lend itself to drive-by attacks on unpatched systems.

‘The Wolfman’ finally gets a chance to howl – latimes.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Forget silver bullets, blooming wolf's bane and full-moon fever — the real curse of “The Wolfman” was all the hard luck that the Universal Pictures release had to claw through to reach the screen Friday.

The old-school monster revival, which stars Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, arrives after enduring a late change in director, three release-date postponements and a major reworking in the edit bay. The strange thing, though, at least according to director Joe Johnston, is that somehow the film underwent a startling metamorphosis in the final cut.

“I think it's turned into a film that is much, much better than the studio or probably anyone else expected,” the filmmaker said while sitting down for lunch at a Beverly Hills hotel. A few minutes later, though, he sounded less certain: “Sometimes you're too close to something and after a period of time you just can't really see it.”

Prime-time flop is over for Jay Leno, now it’s back to ‘Tonight’

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

Jay Leno left his ill-fated prime-time show Tuesday night with a good-natured shrug and a hearty “You're fired!” from Donald Trump.

Leno never acts bothered by much, and he seemed bothered not at all by the end of his 10 p.m. program – despite the fact that NBC moving him to that slot so Conan O'Brien could take over “The Tonight Show” is being widely described as one of the most embarrassing miscalculations in TV history.

Sportscaster Bob Costas compared doing the final bit on the 10 p.m. Leno show with calling the last game for fumbling Los Angeles Clippers basketball team.

Norwegian browser company Opera Software (OPERA.OL) said it would launch a version of its Mini browser for Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhone next week, offering faster download speeds.

Opera said the browser would offer consumers up to six times faster download speeds than Apple's own, and cut data traffic by up to 90 percent. Massive data traffic from iPhone mobile phones has caused problems for many operators networks.

Some analysts said Apple could try to stop rivals from access to iPhone as smooth Internet browsing has been a key feature behind the success of the iPhone.

CIT TARP wipeout is official- Top Stocks – MSN Money

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

The U.S. Treasury has lost its entire $2.33 billion TARP investment in CIT Group (CIT), according to a regulatory filing submitted Monday.

The Treasury made the investment in CIT in December 2008, but CIT later ran into trouble after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. refused to guarantee its debt, as the FDIC did for larger lenders, including General Electric (GE) and large banks like Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC) and Wells Fargo (WFC). CIT filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 1, reorganizing and returning to a public listing on Dec. 10.

Since Windows 7's final release last fall, some testers have been reporting that dual-boot network computers seem to consume power more efficiently running Windows XP than Windows 7. One example came last October from JKOnTheRun's Kevin C. Tofel, who saw his own Toshiba notebook battery die 45 minutes sooner running Win7 than Windows XP. But even then, Tofel was skeptical of a few curious facts, including that Toshiba changed its power management utilities.

Delay in Response Led to Rift Between Toyota and U.S. Regulators – WSJ.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

For six years, evidence mounted that cars made by Toyota Motor Corp. could accelerate unexpectedly. The problem was a suspected factor in crashes causing more than a dozen deaths.

Toyota blamed the problem on floor mats pinning the gas pedal—until Jan. 19. That day, in a closed-door meeting in Washington, D.C., two top executives from the auto maker gave regulators surprising news: Toyota knew of a mechanical defect in its gas pedals. And Toyota had known for more than a year.

The two top officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “were steamed,” according to a person who discussed the meeting with both sides. As the meeting closed, NHTSA chief David Strickland hinted at handing down the agency's toughest punishments, which can include forcing auto makers to stop selling cars.

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

he largest U.S. banks have a total exposure of $176 billion to four weak European countries whose debt problems have sent shudders through global financial markets in recent days.

According to a report by Barclays Capital, 73 large U.S. banks have exposure of $82 billion to Ireland, $68 billion to Spain, $18 billion to Greece and $8 billion to Portugal.

The report said the level of exposure was relatively low. It also suggested U.S. banks faced limited risk because much of the balance was collateralized.

“Most of this exposure, which includes low-risk collateralized transactions such as repurchase agreements, is concentrated at the 10 largest U.S. banks,” Barclays analysts Jonathan Glionna and Miguel Crivelli said in the report. “In aggregate, exposure to these four countries is approximately 5% of the total foreign exposure of U.S. banks.”

Baidu Posts 48% Jump in Profit – WSJ.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 10, 2010

While Google Inc. explores whether it can continue to do business in China, the country's biggest Internet player, Baidu Inc., posted quarterly results that showed how quickly Web use and online advertising is growing in China.

Baidu's fourth-quarter profiit climbed 48% and revenue rose 40% from a year ago, amid concerns that a difficult transition to a new online-advertising system would continue to hurt its growth.

The dominant player in China's Internet-search market, Baidu has been aggressive in rolling out its Phoenix Nest ad system, but some analysts have wondered if the company has pushed too hard with the overhaul, particularly after the recent departures of two top executives.

Inside Toyota’s epic breakdown | Reuters

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 9, 2010

But in the middle of December, on a cloudy day in the middle of the Japanese archipelago's main island, Ron Medford, the acting head of the U.S. agency that regulates auto safety, was reading Toyota executives the riot act.

Medford had been quietly dispatched by the Obama administration to deliver a firm message: Toyota, he told them, had better get its act together, according to U.S. regulators.

By the time Medford arrived in Japan, Toyota was working through a recall that would involve over 5 million vehicles in the United States. The problem was mundane but potentially lethal: floor mats were trapping the accelerator pedal.

U.S. safety regulators had tied five deaths to accidents where that seemed to be the cause, and there were growing doubts about whether the Toyota floormat and pedal design — a relatively cheap fix — was the only flaw that needed to be addressed.

RealNetworks, Viacom to Spin Off Rhapsody – WSJ.com

Posted in Consulting Updates by as6778 on February 9, 2010

Digital-entertainment company RealNetworks Inc. and Viacom Inc. said they plan to spin off their subscription music service joint venture, Rhapsody America LLC, into a new corporation that will operate independently of the two.

Rhapsody has struggled to compete with other music services, among them Apple Inc.'s iTunes. In August, Rhapsody cut 5% of its jobs as consumer and business spending slowed.

RealNetworks, which is known for RealPlayer, a media player to enable one-click downloading and recording of Internet video, said the spinoff will allow RealNetworks to focus on its own business. Robert Kimball, president and acting chief executive of RealNetworks, said, “Separating Rhapsody into its own independent company is a significant first step in making RealNetworks a more focused and profitable company.”
